Syaohart Incident

This is what I've sent to Colopl as of December 7th, 11:37 PDT. I'm still pending a response from them about what the resolution may be. I suspect I will get a cookie cutter message from them similar to what Jonathan have heard back with. However, as long as it does spark an investigation, with a proper resolution, I don't really care what kind of response I get back.

Team;
Thanks for getting back to me last time when I complained about difficulty level of the event "Waterfall Abyss." Unfortunately, being the support channel email, the only valid times for me to email you is when I have problems with the game; and today, I'd like to shed some light on yet another event problem.

A problem

I first noticed this "Syaohart" player when I was playing tournament for the Mage cup event. 9 turns, 5.74 seconds, this equates to 0.6sec per question. Luckily I was able to use two very powerful skills to clear the boss one round faster. However, I grew increasingly curious and decided to monitor him instead of trying hard at the tournament next time I noticed him.

First Question

This was first question; 0.75sec. Stupidly fast that it is almost humanly impossible.

Second Question

This is second question; 0.66s, even faster. Some players have suggested it is possible to land an answer faster than 2 seconds, or even 1.5 seconds, if it is a monochrome question that they've seen a lot, because they just need to read the answers to know. But two questions in a roll at less than 1 second is very suspicious.

Third Question

This is third question; it took 0.91sec which, assuming if we ignore the previous two questions, and take into account of the tip provided by other players, is a viable (albeit very difficult to achieve) feat.

Fourth Question

Fourth one is 1.03sec which is also possible, but all things accounted, is highly implausible.

Remaining Questions

The particular round of tournament finished with turn 5,6,7,8,9 in 1.6sec total; which works out to 0.32s average. Even if it is only 5,6,7,8 and turn 9 is skill turn which took 0 time, that's still 0.4s per question. This is highly unlikely with all things considered.

Also Laphael

Many players have also reflected to me that another player, Laphael, is potentially cheating as well. As there is no way the player could sustain deck cost of Mr. Bob at lv 17 while still clearing quick enough to gain ranks in tournament. Furthermore, no one really noticed him in top 5 yesterday, which makes that Mr. Bob spirit even more suspicious.

Can you please investigate your system to see if the attempts are valid, and curb any potential cheaters from the events, to make the game a better place for everyone?

Thank you
Andy

Laphael Incident

This is what I've sent to Colopl as of December 8th, 19:28 PDT. Following up the previous communication about Syaohart, Laphael is also someone I would like Colopl to investigate into.

Team;
Here's another problem player. This one is very obvious that something is happening:

Second Question Third Question Fourth Question Result

The pictures speak for themselves. Every single turn, Laphael just use special skill to kill all enemies. However, there is no special skill that charges in 2 turns, and even if there is, they cannot possibly deal so much damage to enable him to complete this every single round.

Please review your system logs and let me know how we can expect this problem to be corrected.

Thank you
Andy

Community Growth, Are We Growing Fast Enough?

With the recent growth in Facebook group as result of the Facebook campaign, as well as private chats with the QDB Editors, I started to wonder, is Colopl making enough money to keep the game afloat? Are we feeding the bear with enough money to keep our game running? Here's a quick analysis I did, and let me know your thoughts.

The Economics

Before we look at our game, let's look at the market in general. In the online game industry, freemium have been a rapid growing trend, and Quiz RPG is no different from many of the predecessors. Offering the game for play, free of charge, Colopl have attracted a sizeable player base, ourselves included. For a typical online game on the freemium model, you're typically looking at the top 5%. This is not the top 5% that pays, but top 5% as a whole. References:

The Expenses

So, how much does it cost Colopl to run our server for us?

Assuming 40 hours work week (If I'm not mistaken, it is more common practice in Japan to have 45 hours work weeks, but let's keep the math simple), 52 weeks/yr / 12month/yr = 4.3 weeks/month, or 172 work hours.

"The new minimum wage — which is set by each prefecture — will thus range from ¥869 in Tokyo to ¥664 in nine prefectures including Tottori, Kumamoto and Okinawa" -- The Japan Times News titled: "Minimum wage to rise to ¥764 per hour on average"

At 764 JPY/hour per title of article suggests, the minimum wage would be around 131,408/month. This is pretty far from the average value of "358,446 JPY" per reported by Salary Explorer. To put in perspective, here are how much these values are in USD.

Assuming they have 2 customer supports getting minimum wage, and 1 translator/copywriter getting average wage, the monthly salary for the team would be around $5900 USD. As for server, since EdgeCast does not make their pricing available, I won't make an estimate on that. But let's safely tact on $1,100 USD per month for server and bandwidth to bring it to an even round number of $7,000 USD per month. There are most likely other expenses I have not included in this (developers and artists wages, for example), and I would not be surprised if it is actually much higher.

The Community and The Revenues

Since Colopl does not disclose active player base size, we cannot know this part for certain. However, based on recent tournaments, I estimate we have around 10K active players. Note I used players, which takes into consideration for people with multiple accounts. I've reached this conclusion because I've seen rankings of 12K by doing just one small tournament round, failing miserably, and ended up with only 10 points. Of course, depending on timing, and other factors, perhaps there are actually more players than this. Still, for simplicity of math, we will go with this number.

Taken into account that we've discussed earlier, top 5% is what matters, which means for the 10K players, top 5% comes out to be the top 500 players. Also basing off of the tournament outcomes, where most of the Facebook community were happily ranking within the top 1,000, it is safe to say that we are a good symbolic representation of the top 500. Even in our group, most people have the firm believe of not participating in IAP; a smaller handful have had a taste of the $32.99 package; significantly lesser are like myself, spending $250+/mn on the game; and even lesser are like Jonathan, spending $1000/mn on guestimated average. All things considered, my guess is that our community, on average, spends less than $20/mn per person, meaning the top 500 players puts in $10,000/mn.

Keeping in mind that both Google and Apple takes a clear 30% cut of all IAP purchases ("You get 70% of sales revenue" -- Apple iOS Developer Program;
"The standard 30% transaction fee applies to in-app transactions on Google Play." -- Google Play Android Developer Help), this brings the actual revenue down to around $7,000/mn. Barely breaking even based on the little operational expense we've listed above. Not to mention that expense assumes that the Japanese server lifts the weight for development and art expenses, and there is no room what so ever for marketing campaign, etc..

Where to Go from Here

Since all businesses are in it for the money, literally, and by now, it is clear that the US server is probably not making money, we need to ask ourselves: What can we do to make sure they keep making more money to keep the server online for us? Well, here's a short list of things we can try:

  1. The obvious solution: Spend more money.

    ~$750 iTunes Gift Card

    This is silly, but entirely valid. If we all spend a bit more than we are now, we can boost the value, and they'll have a bit more to cover. However, this is not for everyone, as not everyone would like to waste this much money on a silly 'free' game.

  2. Second obvious solution: Bring in more people.

    Hands up, how many of us didn't actually invite any of our friends, but 200 other people who's already playing this game from the group?

    -raises hand-

    If most of us aren't bringing in more people -- which, based on the amount of mutual friends I'm seeing, I'm fairly certain is the case -- then the community isn't really growing, and the amount of top 5% will continue to remain small. On the other hand, if we bring in 1,000 more people to the game, we'd introduce 50 more paying players, and if we maintain the same rate, that's $1,000 per month of revenue... not a lot of money, but enough to keep Kuma interested for a few more months.

  3. Least obvious solution: Foster a good community.

    We are almost there. With a generally decent and welcoming community here on Facebook, and as result of the Facebook friend campaign, we are slowly becoming the de-facto community for the game.

    However, even less obivous to the solution, we still have some internal drama happening. Of course, as the community size grows, this is bound to happen. And we are doing a pretty decent job disguising it from the new comers. We cannot fix the past, but we can work together to fix the future. If everyone is more curteous to one another, and be less blunt in general, we can hope to create an organic community that will grow on its own, resulting in more active players, resulting in more money going to the evil Kuma.
